Clearing up False Ideas

The Bible teaches that Soul Winners SAVE people from Hell:

1st Corinthians 9.22: “To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.

Romans 11.14: “If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them.”

Jude 22-23: “And of some have compassion, making a difference: And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.”

James 5.20: “Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.”

1st Corinthians 7.16: “For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife?

God uses PEOPLE to reach people:

Ephesians 6.19-20: “And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.”

Matthew 9.35-38: “And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.”

Romans 10.13-17: “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Verse 20. “But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me.”

1st Corinthians 15.34: “Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.”

John 5.5-7: “And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.

Acts 8.27-30: “And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship, Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet. And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.”

Ezekiel 22.23-31: “And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Son of man, say unto her, Thou art the land that is not cleansed, nor rained upon in the day of indignation. There is a conspiracy of her prophets in the midst thereof, like a roaring lion ravening the prey; they have devoured souls; they have taken the treasure and precious things; they have made her many widows in the midst thereof. Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shewed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them. Her princes in the midst thereof are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, to get dishonest gain. And her prophets have daubed them with untempered morter, seeing vanity, and divining lies unto them, saying, Thus saith the Lord God, when the Lord hath not spoken. The people of the land have used oppression, and exercised robbery, and have vexed the poor and needy: yea, they have oppressed the stranger wrongfully. And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none. Therefore have I poured out mine indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath: their own way have I recompensed upon their heads, saith the Lord God.”

Why a thorough, and efficient explanation is important:

The Bible talks about people who Believe, or have Faith IN VAIN.

1st Corinthians 15.1-4: “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”

Matthew 13.19: “When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.”

Luke 8.12: “Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.”

1st Corinthians 15.12-17: “Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not. For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised: And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.”

John 14.6: “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

John 8.24: “I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.

2nd Corinthians 11.4: “For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.”

Misplacing trust/faith in works will DAMN someone to Hell:

As saved Christians, we have a tendency to think that more people are saved than really are.

Luke 13.23-25: “Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them, Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able. When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are:”

Galatians 1.6-9: “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

Matthew 7.22-23:Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”

Romans 3.20: “Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.”

Hebrews 6.1: “Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,”

1st John 5.10-15: “He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”

Be willing to be CORRECTED on your soul winning

Proverbs 6.23: “For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:”

Proverbs 10.17: “He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth.”

Proverbs 12.1: “Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.”

Proverbs 15.10: “Correction is grievous unto him that forsaketh the way: and he that hateth reproof shall die.

Proverbs 15.31-32: “The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise. He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.”

Soul Winning is to be taken as Important and Serious:

We are REPRESENTING the King of Kings and His Kingdom

2nd Corinthians 5.18-20: “And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.”

Be SERIOUS

1st Peter 4.5-8: “Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead. For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit. But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.”

FOCUS on the Mission

Philippians 3.13-15: “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.”

DRESS Professional

Zephaniah 1.8: “And it shall come to pass in the day of the Lord’s sacrifice, that I will punish the princes, and the king’s children, and all such as are clothed with strange apparel.”

This is taken out of context, but the point is that God does care about our clothing. Don’t dress like the world or like a bum, be professional when representing Christ.

Be Mindful of your SPEECH

Be sure to speak clearly and slowly to ensure they can understand. We’re not rushing through a script or a presentation, they need to understand the gospel. Be sure to not say anything inappropriate or confusing.

Ephesians 4.29: “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”

Realize the GRAVITY of the Job

Titus 2.6-8: “Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.”

How to go Soul Winning:

Door to door

Acts 20.19-21: “Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews: And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publicly, and from house to house, Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Acts 5.42: “And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.”

Luke 14.23: “And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.”

Luke 19.10: “For the Son of man is come to SEEK and to save that which was lost.”

In TWOS

Mark 6.7: “And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits;”

Ecclesiastes 4.8-12: “There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity, yea, it is a sore travail. Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up. Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone? And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”

With the BIBLE, the Word of God

1st Corinthians 2.4-5: “And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.”

Psalm 126.5-6: “They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.”

Romans 10.17: “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Isaiah 55.10-11: “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”

AVOID Arguments and Debates. Avoid Questions not about the Gospel. You can easily get off track. It is your job as the Soul Winner to take control of the conversation and to not let it go down rabbit holes. The one asking the questions is controlling the conversation.

2nd Timothy 2.23-25: “But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;”

Titus 3.9-11: “But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain. A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject; Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.”

Be bold and confident

1st Thessalonians 2.2-4: “But even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention. For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile: But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.”

Be KIND and Gracious

Colossians 4.3-6: “Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds: That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak. Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.”

Proverbs 13.10: “Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.”

Matthew 10.16: “Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.”

Who Needs to go Soul Winning:

Everyone who is SAVED

2nd Corinthians 5.18-20: “And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.”

The YOUNG men

1st Timothy 4.12: “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”

The CHILDREN

2nd Kings 5.4-2: “And the Syrians had gone out by companies, and had brought away captive out of the land of Israel a little maid; and she waited on Naaman’s wife. And she said unto her mistress, Would God my lord were with the prophet that is in Samaria! for he would recover him of his leprosy. And one went in, and told his lord, saying, Thus and thus said the maid that is of the land of Israel.”

The Gospel is so simple and easy a child can be saved and give it, but the least a child can do is point someone in the right direction.

The WOMEN

Acts 2.17-18: “And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:”

Acts 21.8-9: “And the next day we that were of Paul’s company departed, and came unto Caesarea: and we entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, which was one of the seven; and abode with him. And the same man had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy.”

The ELDERLY

Psalm 92.12-14:The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing;”

Anyone who understands Hell is ETERNAL

Luke 16.27-28: “Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.”

Qualifications for the Soul Winner:

Luke 8:26-39: “26 And they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee.

27 And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs.

28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not.

29 (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.)

30 And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him.

31 And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep.

32 And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them.

33 Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked.

34 When they that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city and in the country.

35 Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

36 They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed.

37 Then the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about besought him to depart from them; for they were taken with great fear: and he went up into the ship, and returned back again.

38 Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him: but Jesus sent him away, saying,

39 Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him.”

Publish means to Make Public. He did not open up a printing press and start publishing Gospel Tracts!

Mark 1.45: “But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter.”

  1. Must be SAVED!
  1. Must be Wearing CLOTHES.
  1. Must be in your RIGHT Mind.

Starting the Conversation

Starting The conversation can be the hardest part

Start by saying: “Hello, I’m _______ with ______ BAPTIST Church, talking to people about the Gospel of Christ, do you go to church anywhere?”

This question is to GAUGE where someone may be spiritually, and to tell them upfront who you are and what you want. No matter their answer, follow up with saying:

“Okay, well more important than church, I try to ask everyone this question. God forbid it were to happen, but if you were to die today, are you 100% sure that you would go to heaven?”

The Biblical Gospel is by grace alone through faith alone, because it is all by Christ alone. We cannot be saved by anything we do, it’s not of ourselves at all, and so if someone puts their faith in Christ alone, they should know they’re saved. If they say they hope so or think so, or any answer less than “YES” then they are probably trusting in theirself or something they’ve done.

Even if they are not 100% certain, I still try to ask the following question to gauge where their thinking is:

“What do YOU believe someone must do to go to Heaven?”

If they are not 100% certain that they’re saved, tell them “Okay, the Bible says that we can know for sure. I would love to show you from the Bible how you can know for 100% certainty that you will go to Heaven? Do you have a few moments to see what the word of God says?”

If they say yes, go straight into the Gospel beginning in Romans 3. If they say no, say:

Okay, that’s fine, let me leave you with just one verse: Ephesians 2.8-9 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” This verse tells us that salvation is solely by faith and not of anything that we do or can do. Are you sure you don’t want to hear more?

If they seem interested or ask for more, show them the Gospel, if not then politely say goodbye and leave. We don’t want to waste time with people that are totally uninterested or busy when someone at the next door could get saved.

Now let’s go back. If someone answers with 100% positivity that they are saved, then this person is either saved, or going to be the most difficult person to get saved. Ask them:

“Okay great! What is it that you believe someone has to do to go to Heaven?”

If they answer with any form of works, grace + works, or anything at all that isn’t “Faith” “Trust” “Believe” “Call on the Lord”, then tell them:

“Okay, and that’s what a lot of people say, but the BIBLE actually says something different. Could I take a few moments to show you what the Bible actually says about how to get to Heaven?”

If they say sure, then take them through the Gospel, you may want to explain why their sin is important a little more and explain faith alone and eternal life more.

Now let’s go back again. If they answer that salvation is by Faith, belief, or something similar, here is the really important part. Most people, including works salvationists, will say salvation is by faith alone. In order to find out what they are truly trusting in, most of the time you need to follow up and say:  “Do you think there is anything that you could do to lose your salvation, or do you believe in once saved always saved?”

This question is very CRUCIAL. Most people “parrot” that salvation is by faith alone because that is so obviously what Biblical Christianity teaches, but they don’t actually believe or understand that. Many times, it isn’t until you ask them about losing it that you truly find out if their faith is truly in Christ alone, or if they’re trusting themselves. If someone tells you that they can lose it or that they have to maintain their salvation, then you need to give them the gospel because they are not saved. They need to have their faith in Christ alone, not Christ plus works, or Christ plus themselves.

Romans 11.6: “And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.”

1st John 5.10-12: “He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.”

This is why it is important to be thorough and efficient, and make sure they actually UNDERSTAND and believe.

Now, if someone answers those questions correctly, then based on their profession, we believe they’re saved. We can’t control if they lied to us, we can only take them at what they say. This is an important point as well. Many people will get bummed out because the person is already saved so they’re not going to get to win them, and then they just walk off. Don’t! Praise God that this person is saved and rejoice with them before moving on!

Explaining the Gospel

The First point of the Gospel is that they are a SINNER:

This point is important because if they don’t understand they’re a sinner, they are not saved and lying to themselves. They must understand this point of the Gospel first!

1st John 1.8-10: “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”

Here is the scripture you should SHOW them:

Romans 3.23: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”

“This is typically the easiest point to understand, we’re all sinners. You understand you’re a sinner right?”

After this verse I move on to the next point, but in case they aren’t quite sure or familiar here is more you can use: An illustration if needed that is helpful to explain the sinfulness of man is the Grand Canyon Illustration:

If I can jump 5 feet, but you can jump 15 feet, but the Prospect can jump 50 feet, it doesn’t matter in comparison to the Grand Canyon. You may be able to leap further than anyone on the planet, but you will never leap across the Grand Canyon in the same way that as a Sinner you have no chance in attaining God’s glory and you will certainly fall if you try to make it on your own.

Some people, usually heretics, spend way too much time on this point and belabor the point that they’re a sinner. Ray Comfort style evangelism, which is works based, takes the person through the 10 Commandments and tries to make them agree that they are this awful monster first.

This is totally unnecessary. You don’t have to be this awful monster to go to Hell, you only need one sin. They need to understand the gravity of one tiny sin. The Prospect only needs to know that they are a sinner and what that means. Over emphasizing how much of a sinner they are starts to sell them on the idea that they just need reforming to get saved instead of trusting alone to be saved.

False Prophets usually belabor this point because they want to convince the listener to turn from their sin to righteousness to be saved, which is a damnable message.

Extra/Back up Scriptures to show them if they do not understand/accept:

Romans 5.12: “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Romans 3.10: “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:”

Ecclesiastes 7.20: “For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.”

James 4.17: “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.”

Proverbs 24.9: “The thought of foolishness is sin: and the scorner is an abomination to men.”

The Second point is for them to realize the PENALTY of SIN:

They must understand the Penalty for their sins if they are to understand their need for salvation in the first place. They need to know what they need salvation from. The Bible calls Eternal Judgment, or Hell, a principle/fundamental of the Faith that must be understood.

Hebrews 6.1-2: “Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.”

These are the scriptures you should SHOW them:

Romans 6.23a: “For the wages of sin is death…”

“The Bible teaches that sin has a penalty, which is death, but when it says death it’s talking about going to Hell.”

Revelation 20.10, 13-15: “10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.” “13-15 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”

“So we see the dead are judged by God for their sins, and then he casts them into the Lake of Fire which is the second death. So, when the Bible says the penalty of sin is death, it’s talking about Hell and the Lake of Fire. The Bible even has a list of people going to the Lake of Fire”

Revelation 21.8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

“See how it lists all these really bad sins, but then it also says “all liars” even lying makes us deserve Hell. Let me ask you, have you ever told a lie before?”

Typically they’ll admit they’re a liar, but if not you will want to drop down to verse 27 which makes it clear that one lie is enough.

Revelation 21.27: “And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.”

“Everyone has lied before, and that means we deserve Hell. But, God loves us and he doesn’t want us to go to Hell, but he wasn’t kidding when he said that the penalty for sin is Hell. Now, do you know what God did so that we can be saved?”

Heaven is a perfect and sinless place where God is, and not even one sin can enter into Heaven. One lie is enough to send us to Hell. The Prospect needs to understand the graveness of their sin and that they have no hope of saving themselves. If they have trouble accepting the fact that they’re a sinner and deserve Hell for sin, here are some extra passages. Usually, this is enough.

Extra/Back up Scriptures to show them if they do not understand/accept:

Isaiah 64.6: “But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.”

2nd Thessalonians 1.8-9: “In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;”

Revelation 14.10-11: “The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.”

The Third point is for them to understand the Story of Christ and his Death, Burial, and Resurrection:

No matter their response to the question I tell them that God doesn’t want us to go to Hell so he sent his Son Jesus to die in our place, reading:

Romans 5.8: “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

“Are you familiar with who Jesus is?”

Ask this question to gauge how familiar they are to see how much you need to show them. If they Don’t know about Jesus or the Trinity, then show them those scriptures so they have an understanding of who God is:

“The Bible says that Jesus is God the Son. There is only one God, but God is three distinct persons.”

1st John 5.7: “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.”

“The Bible teaches that God the Word became flesh, he came from Heaven.”

John 1.1, 14: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”

The Word is both with God and is God, this is only possible with the understanding of the Trinity. And Christ was born of a virgin. So Jesus was the Son of God because only God was his father, he didn’t have a human father.

1st Timothy 3.16: “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.”

“Now, understanding with our human, finite minds can be a little complicated to ponder, but it’s clearly what the word of God says, does that make sense?”

This section is important because they must believe in the Right God and the Right Jesus in order to be saved.

John 8.24: “I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.”

1st John 2.22-23: “Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.”

John 20.31: “But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.”

1st Corinthians 15.14: “And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.”

If they are unsure, have questions, or don’t believe any of these points make sure to address them with some additional scriptures here:

Matthew 1.23: “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”

Matthew 16.16: “And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Matthew 12.39-40: “But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”

John 20:27-28: “Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.

1st Corinthians 15.3-4: “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”

Isaiah 53.10: “Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.

If they already understood, or if now they do, here are the Scriptures to SHOW them the Gospel of Christ:

“And so as the Son of God, Jesus lived a completely sinless life and always did good and did many miracles and wonders, but then when he was around 33 years old the religious crowd at the time didn’t like his message to the beat him, spit on him, whipped him, and put a crown of thorns on him. He was a bloody mess, and then they crucified him on the cross.”

1st Peter 2.24: “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

“He bore our sins in his own body. He died under the weight of our sins. So every sin you have ever done, and ever will do, and every sin I have ever done or will do- it was as if Jesus had done it. He was being punished for our sins. Then they took his body when he had died, and buried it in the tomb. Now let me ask you this, when he died, where do you think his soul went?

A Point most people do not go over, is that Jesus went to Hell when he died. When Jesus was on the Cross he became sin and took on the sins of the world and was separated and forsaken by God the Father as his wrath was poured out on Jesus. When Jesus died under the Penalty of Sin, his Soul went to Hell, the Penalty of Sin, and his soul became a burnt offering for man. This point is really powerful and impacts the Prospect and makes them appreciate the sacrifice of Christ so much the more.

“Most people think his soul might’ve gone to Heaven, but look at what the Bible actually says.”

Acts 2.31: “He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.”

“Let me ask you again, what do we deserve because we’re sinners? That’s right, we deserve Hell. Because Jesus died and paid for our sin account, for those three days and three nights he was in the place of the dead, suffering the pains of death, which is Hell. So when he died under our sins, his soul then went to hell, and he burned and suffered in Hell for three days and three nights. The good news is that he didn’t stay in Hell, but three days later he rose again from the dead. He showed the disciples the holes in his hands. He resurrected bodily.”

Now bring it in to explain that there is something we have to do to receive this payment:

“The Bible is really clear that Jesus did die for everybody. It says that he died “not for our sins only, but also for the sins of the whole world” in 1 John 2:2. Now, not everyone is going to Heaven, we saw a list of people that are going to Hell. The question then is, if Christ died for our sins and made the payment to save us, what do we have to do to be saved? God wants us to be saved, so he made it crystal clear and told us what we must do to be saved.”

The Fourth point is to explain that Salvation is by Believing ONLY, No Works:

This point and the next is where we spend more time because this is where we mostly start to lose people. Most people add to the requirement of salvation.

Acts 16.30-31: “And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.”

“That is all. He did NOT say, “Join a church, and you’ll be saved. Get baptized, and you’ll be saved. Live a good life, and you’ll be saved. Repent of all your sins, and you’ll be saved, NO. He said “believe.” Believing on Christ is the only requirement.”

Make note of what they believed in at the start of the conversation and bring it up at this point. If they originally said “Live a good life” Say, “He didn’t say to live a good life and you’ll be saved. Just believe on the Lord is all he said”

“Even the most famous verse in the whole Bible, whose reference is written on the bottom of cups at many restaurants and you’ll see it on signs at football games, It’s so famous. Everybody’s heard of it:”

John 3.16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

“Again, all it says is to believe. That’s all that’s required. And it says it’s everlasting, which means everlasting. It means forever.”

At this point, take a moment to define “believing.” Many people think it just means to think he is real or accept the facts of what he did, or some people make it more than what it is and say it’s surrendering to him. They need to understand this is talking about trust/faith, not a service.

“Now, we have two different definitions of the word “believe.” If a child says they believe in fairies, they’re not saying they trust in fairies but that they think they’re real, whereas if I were to go play in a game and you said you believed in me, you wouldn’t be saying you think I’m real, but rather than you had faith or confidence in me. When it says to believe in Jesus, it isn’t saying to just think he is real, but to place all your faith in him for salvation.”

Ephesians 2.8-9: “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

“Grace means “unmerited or unearned.” You cannot save yourself. We cannot do any work to be saved. He did everything, he died for our sins and paid for our salvation, all we can do is trust him and receive that free gift.”

If they are following and agreeing then I would move on at this point If they don’t understand yet, or question further, SHOW these Scriptures:

Ephesians 1.13-14: “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.” This shows that believe means to trust, and it also gives a strong example showing salvation is eternal by being given the Holy Spirit of Promise as an earnest/downpayment.

Titus 3.5:Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;”

Romans 4.2-8: “For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.

Romans 3.28: “Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.”

How to Handle the “Repent of your sins” issue:

Today there is a lot of confusion about “Repentance” and what it means. There’s a very good chance you will talk to someone that is confused and thinks you have to repent of your sins to be saved. If you hear the word repentance from them you’ll need to ask them what they think it means. If they think you have to turn from sin or a sinful life to be saved, show them these passages after showing the first three that laid the foundation of faith without works for salvation:

Jonah 3.10: “And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.”

“This verse defines “turning from an evil way, or sins,” is works. God calls repenting of sin as works, and we already know we cannot be saved by works. So adding turning from sin to the gospel is corrupting the gospel with works.”

Galatians 2.16: “Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.”

“Sin is the transgression of God’s law, so to turn from sin, would be to turn to obeying God’s Law. We cannot be  saved by doing the works of the Law. God says that anyone who tries to be saved by doing the works of the Law will not be saved.”

Part of the Fourth point, or you could call it Point Five, is that Salvation is Everlasting Life, not Temporary:

Explain salvation using the Gift Illustration, tying in Ephesians 2.8-9 from the last point:

Romans 6.23: “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

You can use any object, but I use my Bible since I have it in hand. The Illustration goes:

“If I were to offer you a Bible, but required you to pay me $20, is that a gift? No, that’s a Purchase.

If I were to offer you a Bible, but required you to wash my car, is that a gift? No, that’s a Service.

If I were to offer you a Bible, but required you to mow my lawn once a weej, is that a gift? No, that’s a Job.

What if I said I would take it back if you made me mad, is that a gift? No, that’s a Loan.

Churches and Preachers treat salvation the same way. They will say things like:

You can be saved, but you have to pay an Indulgence. That’s a Purchase.

You can be saved, but you have to be baptized. That’s a Service.

You can be saved, but you have to surrender to the Lord, Repent of your sins. That’s a Job.

You can be saved, but if you get into sin or get out of church, then you would lose your salvation. That’s a Loan, or Temporary Life.”

Explain that Salvation is a FREE GIFT that cannot be lost.

“Now, many people have a problem with the gospel because they want to say that we have to do something and they think that if we cannot lose our salvation then we can just sin and live however we want, and I want to show you something to help explain this, look at John 1:12”

John 1.12: “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:”

Explain the Father-Son Relationship Illustration, and how God punishes his children, but will never send us to Hell:

Psalms 89.30-34: “If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments; If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments; Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail. My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.”

“This is a really bad christian. They’re not living right, they’re not walking in righteousness, they’re not doing good works, they’re not keeping the commandments, and God says he will punish them, but it’s punishment on this earth, because he says that he will not take his love from them. This is just like with my children. If my children do something wrong, I punish them, but I don’t stop loving them, I don’t kick them out of the family, and I don’t put them in the oven. They’re my kids. In the same way, once you’re saved you are a child of God and he will punish you for sin, but he doesn’t kick you out of the family and he will not break his promise. And what was his promise?”

Titus 1.2: “In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;”

“Is there anything God can’t do? God cannot lie. God promised that if you believe on Jesus Christ that you have eternal life and that you will not perish, so if you believe on Christ today, no matter how sinful you live afterward, he’ll punish you on this earth, but he won’t send you to Hell. Does that make sense?”

Everlasting life isn’t something we get in the future, we presently possess it at the MOMENT of belief:

John 5.24: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”

“So if you believe on Jesus Christ, the Bible says you have everlasting life, presently. You don’t get it in the future, but you get it the moment you believe on Christ. You are going to live forever. He even promises that you won’t go into condemnation. So, If you believe today, you receive everlasting life today, and Christ promises that you can never go to Hell. Once you’re saved, once you believe on him, you’re saved forever, and no matter what, you can never lose your salvation.”

John 11.25-26: “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?”

“Jesus says if you believe in him you’ll never die. Never. Never is a strong word. He didn’t say you might die, nope, never. If you believe on Christ, you can never go to Hell, you’re saved forever. Jesus then followed up asking if they believed that, so let me ask you. Do you believe Jesus can give you eternal life that never ends?”

This Passage is very powerful along with John 10.28-29 showing how once someone believes they will never go to Hell. It proves that “Everlasting Life” is not a name for the quality of Life, but the duration, because it simply says we will “Never die.” Salvation is a done deal with no opportunity to lose it. It isn’t possible to die once you believe.

Extra/Back up Scriptures to SHOW them if they do not understand/accept:

We receive the Holy Spirit at salvation, and the Bible says that is the earnest, or down-payment, to prove that we will receive the inheritance as sons and daughters:

Ephesians 1.13-14: “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.”

Christ promised that whoever believes will have everlasting life and that he will raise us up:

John 6:40 “And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.”

Christ said we will never perish, and that we’re in his hands, and also the Father’s hands. No one is stronger than the Triune God:

John 10:28-29 “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.”

Finishing by Leading them in Prayer

Now it’s time to land the plan and make it all apply the message to the Prospect. Now, the gospel is pretty clear in the Bible. Unfortunately, many people will go to Hell because they still think they have to do some works to be saved. Jesus was actually asked if few or many will be saved, look how Jesus responded:

Matthew 7.13-14: “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”

“The question is this. If being saved is so easy, and all I have to do is believe, then why are most people going to Hell? Well, Jesus explains why this is:”

Matthew 7.22-23: “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”

“Many people who believe in Jesus, they call him Lord, and they even do many things in his name, and yet Jesus sent them to hell, why? It’s because they were trusting in their works. If you have any trust in your works at all, you cannot be saved. If you’re trusting in other things, and you say, “Well, I’m going to heaven because I’m a good Christian, or I do all these good things.” he’ll say to depart from him. You must trust with all your heart.”

REVIEW the Plan of Salvation

Ater going through the Gospel, we need to review with them before we pray with them to make sure they were paying attention and actually believe the Gospel:

Ask them: “Do you understand that you’re a sinner.

Ask them: “Where do we deserve to go without Jesus?” Do they understand they deserve Hell?

Ask them: “What did Jesus do for you?” and follow with “What did he do 3 days later?”

ASK THEM: “What did the Bible say we have to do to be Saved?”

Ask them: “How long does salvation last?” Also ask: “Is there anything you can do to lose it?”

If they understand the Gospel and say they believe, take them to the following passages:

Romans 11.6: “And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.”

“It’s not 99% Jesus, and 1% me. It must be all on Jesus. There can be no good thing that I have to do in order to be saved, it’s simply trusting him alone and receiving a free gift. When I got here you said you thought ____, but now you have changed your mind and understand it’s by believing only, not____.”

Romans 10.9-13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

“Now that you have changed your mind and understand that it’s by believing only and that you cannot lose it, the Bible says to call on the Lord and place your trust in Christ.”

John 4.10: “Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.”

“When Jesus led this lady to the Lord, he told her that if she would ask, then he would give her to drink. Salvation is this simple. Jesus paid for salvation and all we have to do is trust him and what he did, and just ask him for the gift of salvation, and the Bible says that he will give it to you.”

This is where I would use the Chair Illustration:

“Now, I like to give an example using a chair. If I say that I believe this chair can hold my weight, but if I just stand there, that’s believing a fact, not faith. If I sit down in the chair, but I hold myself up a little, that’s partial faith in the chair and partial faith in myself, but if I rest all of my weight in the chair and I’m relaxed not worrying if I’m going to fall, that is 100% faith in the chair. That’s what you have to do with Jesus. It’s not just simply thinking he is real, and it’s not you doing good works or living a good life plus Jesus, no it’s total trust and resting in Christ to save you. The way you do this is by praying to the Lord and confessing you’ve changed your mind and that you’re trusting in him alone, and rely on him to save you, asking for salvation. Does that make sense?”

This is a crucial point that most people mess up

You already discovered the person was lost and trusting a false gospel and you have taken them through many passages that have enlightened them to the true gospel. Explaining Biblical Repentance using the above verses helps to make understand that they need to call on the Lord and ask for salvation.

Acts 20.21: “Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

Biblical Repentance

Repentance is a change of Mind. Explain to them and confront them that they were trusting in works, but now they see the Bible teaches salvation is by faith, that means they changed their mind and they need to now call on the Lord and place their faith in him.

Lead them in Prayer

Once you have done all this, Tell them that you are going to lead them in a prayer to ask God for salvation.

A lot of people fumble the fish and do not successfully reel it in by asking “Would you like to do that?” At this point, they have affirmed they understand and believe everything you

have shown them, they just need to call on the Lord and ask for salvation, and they need you to lead them in that.

If you ask them if they want to take that leap, then all of the pressure is placed on them and it doesn’t take much convincing from the devil or from their own flesh to decline, when in reality they want to. Many people who would get saved do not because the Soul Winner is not assertive enough.

Instead, TELL THEM that you are going to lead them and explain that it’s not a magical prayer, but it’s the fact you’re calling on him in faith and asking for salvation. This is how I say it:

“What I’m going to do now is pray out loud. It’s not a magic prayer that you have to repeat, but it’s the fact you’re calling on the Lord in total faith in him and asking to be saved, I am just going to help you do that, so you can repeat after me to the Lord, pray this:”

Explain that all we have to do is put our trust in Christ alone, and simply ask God to save them, and then tell them you are going to pray out loud, and they can simply repeat after you. Explain that you’re just helping them put it into words.

You can pray something like this:

“Dear God, I know I am a sinner, and I know I deserve Hell, but Lord I believe that you love me, and that you sent your Son Jesus to die for me, and I know that he rose again from the dead. I’m only trusting in you Lord, please save me right now, and give me the gift of eternal life. Thank you for saving me, Amen!”
